Bearing Technical Committee

Chairman - Don Nisley, Baldor-Dodge

In addition to developing industry standards, which are submitted to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for approval as American National Standards, ABMA serves as the Secretariat of the ANSI Accredited National Standards Committee B3 on Rolling Element Bearings. This Committee is responsible for the approval of American National Standards for bearings and has a balanced membership of bearing producers, users and general interest experts. They also decide on revision or withdrawal of existing standards. With the world - and our industry - shifting to metric standards, much of the work in developing U.S. metric bearing standards has changed. Instead of developing solely U.S. metric bearing standards, ABMA is actively developing international standards that can be adopted as American National Standards. The Bearing Technical Committee and its subcommittees conduct much of this detailed work.

ABMA currently serves as the secretariat for four subcommittees of the International Standards Organization Technical Committee 4 on Rolling Bearings and Spherical Plain Bearings. These subcommittees cover: insert bearings, tapered roller bearings, miniature/instrument bearings and linear motion bearings. We also participate on the Tolerances and Load Rating Subcommittees, plus those on needle roller and spherical plain bearings. Additionally, ABMA is the secretariat for the subcommittee on airframe bearings for ISO Technical Committee 20. Positions on international standards issues are developed by the BTC. ABMA members are encouraged to participate as delegates to ISO technical committee and subcommittee meetings. As administrator of the USA Technical Advisory Group for ISO/TC4, ABMA is responsible for developing and conveying the United States' position on all proposals concerning bearings. The ABMA professional staff records the minutes, circulates papers representing different points of view, prepares drafts of the standards, conducts voting on the drafts, and when approval has been reached, publishes the approved standards.
